diabetes, glucometer, blood test

Are you suffering from diabetes? Did you know that monitoring the blood glucose level is the most vital step in treating and managing diabetes?

You must be thinking of visiting a hospital or a medical laboratory to do the blood tests.Well, thanks to the modern technology. You no longer need to visit the “laboratory” to do the blood glucose tests. You can check the blood glucose level in the comforts of your home or office. All you need is a ˚Glucometer” (glucose meter).

Once you’ve made the decision to buy a glucometer, you’ll be facing the next big question – “Which blood glucometer to buy?”. Now, that’s because you must have heard about a dozen of popular glucometer brands. Your diabetic friends or family members might also have their own suggestions. Here in this post, I’ll be helping you to make the right choice by quickly listing the features and reasons to consider  five of the best blood glucometers that you can buy online from Amazon

MUST READ: Ten Tips for Choosing the right Glucose Meter

This list is based on my clinical experience and gathering some info from a couple of friendly diabetic patients of mine. So in no particular order, here are my pick of the best glucometers :

#1 Accu-Chek Performa Glucometer

accu chek performa glucometer

The Accu-Chek Performa glucometer is a new product from the popular glucometer manufacturers. This glucose meter doesn’t require any “coding” prior to the actual testing and is fairly simple to use. The large display, one-button navigation and the infrared data transfer features makes this glucometer a no-brainer for it’s price. The test strips are also cheaper compared to the other popular brands available in the market.

#2 One Touch Select Simple Glucometer

As the name depicts, this popular glucose meter from Johnson & Johnson is really simpler than one can imagine. The simplicity of this device however doesn’t compromise on the accuracy of test results or it’s performance. Bonus features like colour & sound alarms, no-coding, no-buttons and cheap test strips at an unbelievable low price makes this glucometer a must have device for all diabetics. You can read the full review of One Touch Select Simple glucometer here.[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”y” height=”325″ identifier=”B01GQ7D3LS” locale=”IN” localize=”y” src=”http://beingthedoctor.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/51qxwkIXtZL.jpg” tag=”beithedoc-21″ width=”500″]

#3 Accu-Chek Active Glucometer

The Accu-Chek Active is a veteran among the glucose meters mentioned here. The big difference is the need to “code” the new vial of test strips every time. But, the accuracy and the ease of use of this glucometer has made it a favourite one in many hospitals including mine. Added features include 500 test value memory, micro USB data transfer, sound signals for insufficient blood sample and ability to tag every test value as pre or post meal ones. All these features make this glucometer a good choice for a very reasonable price. For a full review of the Accu-Chek Active glucometer go to this page.

#4 Bayer Contour Next EZ glucose meter

The Bayer Contour Next EZ glucose meter is one of the best selling glucometer worldwide. The unique feature of this meter is it’s high accuracy of test results which is made possible by checking each sample 7 times before displaying the final result. The sleek glucose meter also has very good memory capacity, pre and post meal markers, adjustable personalised alarms, USB connectivity and comes with the manufacturing guarantee of the German healthcare giants. The only downside of this meter is the high cost of test strips compared to other popular brands. If you’re not on a budget, go for this glucometer with your eyes closed.

#5 Bayer Contour Next USB Glucose Meter

I’ve already reviewed this unbelievably small USB type glucose meter earlier and you can find that page here. The Bayer Contour Next USB glucose meter is an upgrade to the Contour Next version and is priced a bit more than it’s big brother. It is also equipped with 2000 value memory capacity, direct USB data transfer, second-chance technology (that helps save valuable test strips by allowing the blood sample to be applied a second  time), auto log, high accuracy and GlucoFacts software (built in). Good news is that it’s now available in India and the bad news is it’s cost.

Congrats! As you’ll be switched over to Insulin very shortly, you’ll be better off with any of the glucometers mentioned in this page for regular blood sugar monitoring.

Hi Dr. Prasoon, this is a nice collection of Glucometers. Which glucometer do you personally suggest? I think Accu-check is closest to what I’ve seen in terms of accuracy.

    What do you think?

The Active is like the old Nokia 3310 and the rest are the new android 4G models. The Active is accurate, reliable and more than enough for daily glucose monitoring. It has been my favourite one for quite a long time now.

This is great info !! Thank you so much Doc. I’m recently diagnosed with type 2 and I was deep depression for about 2 weeks then i found this site. I read all articles and now i feel confident that i can manage it well. Thanks a lot again.
My doc suggested me to buy a gluco meter. He also suggested me to go for One touch models as there is some issue with Acue check strips. Is that true or not sure if they are promoting Onetouch.
Did you review One touch verioflex already ? somehow i could not find it here.

      Hello there,
Happy to know that the articles at BeingTheDoctor were helpful for you. The only problem with Accu-Chek test strip is that, the code has to be changed with each new vial (applicable for the “Active” model only). We have a review of the OneTouch select simple model too. Kindly read it before buying one.
